Joshua and Caleb are the oldest men in this nation, by 20 years or more, and Joshua was not in good shape – I don’t find his age. With all the lands and cities listed in the chapters we read this week, there is still much land to be conquered and given by God to Israel. At God’s urging, the land is divided among the children of Israel by lot, except that Caleb was given Mount Hebron, as he was promised by Moses. He then drove out three of the sons of Anak (probably also giants), and went on to take over Debir, offering his daughter to the man who could conquer it. My study Bible says Debir was about 10 miles from Hebron. Too close for comfort? His nephew apparently takes on the challenge. Caleb’s daughter gets him to give them a better piece of land, with water. It appears this was in the land of Judah. Did Caleb belong to the tribe of Judah? In 5 years (according to Caleb’s account in CH 14), all the giants that caused such great fear in the hearts of the previous generation are defeated – Og and the Bashans, the Anakims, and several chapters of cities. This was a miraculous campaign and demonstrates for us the power available, again, if we have faith and simply obey.
